West Sands Beach, St Andrews

About a fifteen minute walk from St Andrews town centre, no trip to the St Andrews area would be complete without visiting the world-renowned West Sands Beach. The beach is perhaps most famous as being the venue for the opening sequences from the film “Chariots of Fire” and is a sandy type beach.

The beach is nearly two miles in length and there are beautiful views wherever you are on the beach which is backed with sand dunes and the world famous St Andrews old links golf course. When walking the beach visitors will see a mixture of dogs, families, joggers, riders, surfers and walkers all taking in the ambience!

Whatever time of year the beach is visited is fine, the St Andrews area is fairly dry and warm for the UK as a whole. So whether walking the beach on a balmy summer’s day or walking on a bracing winter morning a trip to the beach will never disappoint. West Sands is one of ninety-one UK beaches which have been awarded the green coast award for 2016.

If you do get caught out by rain other attractions such as the Eden Nature Reserve and the British Golf Museum are just a short distance away, there are also numerous restaurants and cafes available too. Other facilities on the beach include first aid points, lifeguards at peak season, shops and toilets. There is also (chargeable) car parking for up to 5,000 cars.

On TripAdvisor the beach is rated 3rd out of 42 St Andrews activities and has received a 96% rating of either excellent or very good at the time of writing.

Blown Away Experiences on West Sands Beach

Blown Away is an adventure experience company, which was set-up in 2007 and is based towards the northern end of West Sands Beach.

Blown Away offers a range of beach and water sports activities all operated from West Sands Beach. Catering for parties from 1 up to 150 people the experience is ideal for adrenalin seekers of all ages. Most activities (but not all) are suitable for children so Blown Away can be enjoyed as part of a family holiday. The adventure experience is also popular for corporate fun days, stag and hen parties and school trips.
