West Sands Beach and the town of St Andrews in the distance

With summer in full swing, there isn’t really a better time to get out and enjoy everything St Andrews has to offer. There is plenty to do in St Andrews at this time of year as the entire family is catered for before the children return to school.

All the fun of the fair- The Lammas Market

The Lammas market is the oldest surviving medieval market and it comes to St Andrews for five days in August this year. From the 10th until the 14th, Market Street plays host to the fun fair and continental market and the street will be lined with a wide selection of foods and drinks as well as unique stalls, continental crafts and a fun fair to keep the kids entertained. There is something to appeal to everyone at the oldest market in the country.

Kids party the old-fashioned way- Forgan’s Kiddies Ceilidh

Forgan’s of Market Street invite the kids to a traditional Ceilidh dance on the 18th of August. Starting at 10.30am the event promises to be good, wholesome, traditional fun for any kids who want to attend and be taught some traditional dance moves for the morning.

Seeing Scotland through someone else’s eyes- Encountering Scotland

Throughout the month of August, Bell Pettigrew Museum will host a stunning and innovative display of photographs taken by pupils at Madras College and students of English as a Second Language at Fife College who have taken this chance to show what it is like to live in a new place and experience a new culture. This display will be a great opportunity to view the town and life of St Andrews through the eyes of someone completely new to this culture as they settle in to their new homes and lives.

A weekend of traditional music- Aly Bain and Phil Cunningham

The duet of Aly Bain and Phil Cunningham have been described as “probably the best traditional musicians you will ever hear” by Mike Russel and their blend of their incredible musical talent and quick-witted humour is not to be missed when they visit The Byre Theatre over the weekend of the 24th and 25th. Book your tickets in advance for one of these not to be missed shows and enjoy an evening of great music and fantastic entertainment.

Don’t miss the last train – St Andrews Land Train Tour

August is the last month that the 40-minute land train will run through St Andrews, giving visitors a guided tour through the town and surrounding areas. The tour is a complete circuit, but you can break up the journey and get off at any of the stops to explore the areas around you and hop back on the train to complete your journey when you are ready. Take this last opportunity to explore St Andrews in style and in complete relaxation as you learn about the history and listen to local stories and tales as you sit back and relax and enjoy the stunning scenery of St Andrews.

With all these great opportunities, you’re sure to have a fantastic summer in St Andrews.
